Buying a car as a Washington, DC resident
DC residents buying from a Northern Virginia dealership face different rules than their Virginia neighbors, starting with an excise tax based on the car's weight and fuel economy. JB can help you pick the car, and this page explains the District's tax so the numbers make sense.
Parking, permits and city driving
Street parking, garage fees and Residential Parking Permit zones make car size a real question in the District. A compact car or small SUV fits tight spaces and narrow alleys better, and parking sensors and a backup camera help with parallel parking. If most of your trips are short, an electric car or a hybrid also lands in a lower excise tax band than a heavy SUV with low fuel economy.
Buying across the river
Because the dealership is in Virginia, it helps to know the numbers before you cross the river. Browse the listings, then use the calculator below, which starts on DC and lets you pick the car's weight class and MPG band. The pre-qualification form shares your budget and credit range with JB without a credit check.
Registering the car in the District
DC residents title and register their cars with the DC DMV, which collects the excise tax and the title fee explained on this page. A Residential Parking Permit for your block depends on that DC registration. The DC DMV's website lists anything else the car needs, such as an inspection, before registration is complete.
DC excise tax and title
The District's excise tax is a percentage of the car's fair market value, set by its unladen weight and city fuel economy: from 1% for the lightest electric cars to 11% for the heaviest cars rated 20 MPG or less.
For example, a car weighing 3,500 to 4,999 pounds and rated 21 to 25 MPG pays 6%. The DC title fee is $30. The calculator below starts on DC and lets you choose the weight class and MPG band.

Questions from Washington, DC buyers
-
Why does DC's tax depend on weight and MPG?
- Since February 17, 2025, the District sets the excise tax rate by the car's unladen weight and city fuel economy, so lighter, more efficient cars pay a lower percentage of their value. The source for the table is linked on this page.
-
Are electric cars exempt from DC's excise tax?
- Not anymore. Under the current schedule, electric cars pay the lowest rate in their weight class, from 1% to 3% of fair market value.
-
Can I get a Residential Parking Permit for a car I buy in Virginia?
- The permit follows DC registration, not where you bought the car. Once the car is registered in the District at your address, the DC DMV handles the permit.
