From the Greenway to the back roads
Eastern Loudoun commuters often choose between the Dulles Greenway, which charges tolls, and free routes like Route 7 and Route 28, while drivers in the western part of the county spend more time on two-lane roads and unpaved lanes. All-wheel drive, ground clearance and good headlights count for more out west; closer to Ashburn and Sterling, fuel economy and a comfortable cabin in traffic may count for more. Loudoun County's vehicle tax and the towns
Loudoun County assesses a yearly personal property tax on cars kept in the county, and incorporated towns such as Leesburg and Purcellville can add their own charges on top. Ashburn, Sterling and South Riding are not towns, so residents there deal with the county alone. The county's website explains how to report a newly bought car and lists the current rate.
Virginia sales and use tax and title
Virginia charges a motor vehicle sales and use tax of 4.15% of the gross sales price, or $75, whichever is more.
The gross sales price includes the dealer processing fee, and a trade-in does not lower it. Title and registration fees are separate, and the estimate below leaves them out.

- Not directly. If you take the Greenway every day, fuel costs matter less than comfort, and a quiet cabin may be worth more to you. If you skip the tolls on Route 7 or Route 28, you'll spend more time in stop-and-go traffic, where hybrids tend to save the most fuel.

I live in western Loudoun. Should I look for all-wheel drive?
