Beltway, I-66 and Parkway driving
Much of the county's driving happens on the Capital Beltway, I-66 and the Fairfax County Parkway, where stop-and-go traffic rewards a smooth automatic, good driver-assist features and a comfortable seat more than raw horsepower. If part of your week runs on the Silver or Orange Line instead, a smaller, efficient car for the drive to the station may make more sense than a big SUV. Fairfax County bills a yearly personal property tax on vehicles kept in the county. The City of Fairfax, though, is an independent city with its own tax office, so a Fairfax mailing address doesn't always mean the county bills you. Check which locality you live in before you budget, and use its website to find the current rate and how to report a car you just bought.
Virginia sales and use tax and title
Virginia charges a motor vehicle sales and use tax of 4.15% of the gross sales price, or $75, whichever is more.
The gross sales price includes the dealer processing fee, and a trade-in does not lower it. Title and registration fees are separate, and the estimate below leaves them out.
