The county, its towns and two separate cities
Prince William County bills a yearly personal property tax on vehicles kept in the county, and towns inside it, such as Dumfries, Haymarket and Occoquan, can add their own charges. The cities of Manassas and Manassas Park sit within the county's outline but are independent and bill on their own. The county's website explains how to report a newly purchased car.
Virginia sales and use tax and title
Virginia charges a motor vehicle sales and use tax of 4.15% of the gross sales price, or $75, whichever is more.
The gross sales price includes the dealer processing fee, and a trade-in does not lower it. Title and registration fees are separate, and the estimate below leaves them out.
